🚨 Today, we are excited to introduce our first ever Served Profile. Going forward, there will be some weeks where we go out to eat with interesting people in the food world, and tell you about them and their favorite restaurants. This first profile is of Saif Khawaja, a good friend of Grant’s from Penn. He’s also the founder and CEO of Shinkei Systems which aims to democratize access to omakase-quality fish by automating a process known as ike jime.
acceptance as a precondition to change

This is the paradox: to reach transformation, we must let go of the aspiration for transformation. As psychologist Carl Rogers put it:
The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.
While I accept this truth intellectually, and it feels doable when it comes to my self-transformation work… I haven’t yet figured out a way to embody it in integrity and authenticity when it comes to my work for social transformation.
The best time to learn guitar is now. With online lessons a student can be in a room with their teacher all the time.
Traditional music lessons go like this: you see your teacher once a week. You’re given a lot of information at once – technique, theory, musicianship skills. Then your teacher tells you to “go home and practice.” Basically, all of the emphasis is put on that one brief period each week, with the majority of growth left up to the student.
School policies for gun violence are a band-aid for a bullet hole. We need to prevent gun violence upstream. Prevent it from even being a conversation. But, this is where we find ourselves as parents today. So, here we go.
Parents, including myself, are yearning to do something to make schools safer given after yet another mass school shooting sent ripple effects across the U.S. Incidents of gunfire at schools, mass shootings and beyond, are increasing.

Did you know that indigenous Filipinos were put on display in human zoos at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair?
Yesterday was Indigenous Peoples’ Day, yet our histories must live on beyond one day. Also, it’s still Filipino-American History Month so…there’s that. :)
Many people don’t know this because American Imperialism is not often *properly* taught in American schools, but the United States “acquired” the Philippines as a colony after the Philippine-American war ended in 1902.

Add Depth with Red-Leaved Plants
2024-12-03
I write 2 posts a week for Garden and Plant lovers - I offer ideas, plant names and design tips with a bit of garden insights thrown in! That is over 100 ideas a year. Want to add some depth to your landscape? Add a red-leaved tree, shrub or perennial in the back of a planting bed or border. The dark color of the leaves recedes in the background, making any space seem larger.
On the same day the space where Ludivine was born reopened with fresh, new energy, the restaurant that brought important synergy to Midtown in 2010 announced it was closing.
Ludivine chef and co-founder Russ Johnson told me about a month ago he was unsure about the future of the restaurant, but that he was happy with the health of neighboring R&J Lounge & Supper Club and Sun Cattle Company in Film Row.
