ALL THE FAILS W BUSY PHILIPPS
2024-12-02
Okay so here is the full interview with Busy from this week’s All The Fails. I have hated her, I have loved and I have been challenged by her as both a woman and an artist for over half my life. We were never close friends, but in some ways I feel like we are sisters. In fact, I even cast her as my sister, Samantha in my ABC digital show, I LIKE YOU JUST THE WAY I AM.
NOTE: This post contains spoilers for the movie Poor Things. Chief among the spoilers is that this film is a festering, throbbing, physical-pain-inducing failure-slog. But anyway. If you don’t want to know what happens in this film, skip this newsletter. NOTE 2: If you loved the film, I am about to yuck your yum real hard, so you also might want to skip this newsletter. (Good friends in particular who loved the movie, you can definitely skip this one in the service of still liking me later and not thinking I’m an insufferable, fun-hating snob.
All the women in my (tennis) life
2024-12-02
I met Barbara in my German hometown of Darmstadt which is bizarre because Darmstadt is not exactly a tennis city. Barbara was dating a police officer from Darmstadt which is, dare I say, somehow even more bizarre. God and love work in mysterious ways and normally none of those ways lead to Darmstadt.
She needed someone to hit with and people told her about a 15-year-old girl, tall and lanky and full of rage, and that girl was me.
I am really happy to be sharing with you today a book I regard as one of the great treasures of Tibetan Buddhism. I have read it many times over the decades. And because when I read this kind of book I do so with a highlighter in my hand, my own copy is filled with passages in different colours, some faded with time – every one of them a gem.

At 6 p.m. tonight, March 1, 2023, Alleva Dairy in Manhattan’s Little Italy closed after 130 years.
Crippled by the pandemic and over a half million dollars behind in rent, Alleva sparred with its landlord while appealing to the public and media in a bid to stay open. The cheese shop, famed for its mozzarella and fresh ricotta, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the fall, and a vigorous last-ditch effort to stay in business at the corner of Mulberry and Grand streets failed.

Allspice. All the Time.
2024-12-02
Allspice heads into heavy rotation during this most pumpkin-spiciest time of year. In my exotic neck of the woods, New Jersey, a miasma of allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg hangs over every Starbucks. Allspice is sprinkled in all the season’s food stars: apple pie, eggnog, pumpkin pie and gingerbread
You all are a smart bunch, so you undoubtedly know that allspice is a specific spice, not a blend of them. As a kid I thought it was something like pumpkin pie spice, an efficient, maybe even frugal, way to flavor a dish.
Hello, brain health ambassadors. Today we are talking about one of my favorite topics: gelato! I may not have mentioned that I have been an obsessive homemade ice cream maker for much of my life. When I started paying more attention to brain-healthy eating about 10 years ago, my ice cream experiments were pushed aside. After all, I just couldn’t imagine a brain-healthy ice cream makeover that was just as creamy and decadent as the ones I used to make.
